Corrs is one of Australia’s most innovative and successful law firms but it’s our people who make Corrs such a vibrant and positive place to work. Job satisfaction, work/life balance and a diverse client base are just some of the contributing factors to our success in the different legal and employment awards.

We’ve won plenty of these awards too. For example we were named Best Australian Law Firm at the 2009 International Legal Alliance Awards. But being named as the best law firm to work for amongst all the great companies in the BRW Best 50 Places to Work in Australia list showed that our people are proud to be at Corrs and share the values of the firm and its partnership.

Teamwork and collaboration leading to the best outcomes for clients are important values for us. Our partners are approachable and take a positive mentoring role with younger lawyers. You’ll be challenged early and often at Corrs but we believe that the more exposure to leading clients and complex matters we can give you the more proficient a lawyer you’ll become. Most importantly you can count on your team at Corrs to support your work 100%.

Our lawyers are some of the leading exponents in their fields and some of the smartest commercial operators in Australian business. We have international experts in diverse fields of law from Workplace Relations to Wine Law. We have leading dealmakers within the partnership like Teresa Handicott in our Brisbane office. In 2008 Teresa was named Australian Dealmaker of the Year at the Australasian Law Awards for her work on Suncorp’s merger with Promina.

We have people like leading M&A lawyer Braddon Jolley joined Corrs in 2008 who continues to work on some of Australia’s biggest and most complex transactions.

There’s also people like Stephen Stern, one of our IP partners in Melbourne who is also an international expert on Wine Law and was appointed by the French government to protect geographical indications such as Champagne and Cognac.

Whichever Corrs office you work in, there are industry experts and those renowned in their field. And those experts in turn take the job of nurturing the next generation of leading lawyers very seriously. Corrs gives you the chance to work closely with the best in the business.

Most law firms structure themselves around what they know best - the types of law the practice. At Corrs, while we do have practice groups, we’re structured around the needs of our clients - in a way that reflects their industries and their needs.

You’ll soon learn about our industry divisions, where lawyers of all levels from all different practice groups, team up together under banners like Communications & Media, Energy & Resources and Government.

This means that while you’ll get a good grounding in areas of law you recognise, like IP, litigation, tax and corporate finance, you’ll soon find yourself pooling your expertise with lawyers from different areas on real world issues. It could be the an issue of due diligence for the Federal Government, or maybe some advice to one of the big 4 banks for a major acquisition.

Your early months at Corrs will give you a fantastic taste of the full spectrum of legal work before you decide what area you want to specialise in.

From there you’ll find that being a lawyer at Corrs doesn’t mean years working with just a few clients on the same matters.

It means knowing your area of law and applying it throughout the firm to give a wide variety of clients progressive, incisive solutions to their issues.

While we cover the full spectrum of traditional law fields like Banking & Finance, Construction, Media Law, Reconstruction & Insolvency and Workplace Relations we also have experts in more niche fields that you’ll get a chance to work with - for example Wine Law, Information Technology and International Arbitration.

Corrs has fantastic relationships with plenty of big-name clients but it’s the breadth of businesses we work with that distinguishes us as one of Australia’s most innovative firms.

We can count among our major clients 40 of the top 100 ASX listed companies, ten of the 100 largest privately owned companies in Australia, and some of those who feature in the top ten Fortune 500 companies like Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, BP and Pfizer.

Sure we work with the names you’ll know like Vodafone, ANZ, Mirvac, Woolworths and Foster’s.

But we also work with governments, both federal and state, on matters like the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission, the National Broadband Network project and South Australian Desalination project.

Our commitment to all of our clients is exactly the same - whether it’s mining giants like BP, Woodside and AED Oil or leaders in finance like Suncorp-Metway, ING Real Estate and AXA. Incisive advice that leads to the best business results.

Corrs strives to attract the best people. To attract and retain the best, we reward accordingly.

The firm pays close attention to the top tier market. Each year we benchmark our salaries against those of other top tier firms and we use this information to ensure we position our salaries above market average salaries.

Our standard hours are in your contract of employment but we believe that if you’re working into the evening too often, then we are not managing our resources as we should be. There will be the urgent matters that will require some extra hours, but if you are performing at a high level during the working week, then we believe our structure and processes will ensure the job gets done.

Flexibility is the key to managing a busy workload and at Corrs we offer extensive flexible work options which have been taken up by a number of our staff. From remote access to our IT systems to part-time and shift-based working hours, we provide a professional environment where our clients needs are well catered for and our staff achieve an important work/life balance.

Professional development is critical to your success, and we require all our lawyers to achieve 75 hours of professional development annually.

Each year we run intensives for different levels of lawyer (eg New Lawyer Program for 1+ year lawyers, Experienced Lawyer Program for 3+ year lawyers), to ensure you are equipped with the skills your need at each stage of your career.

The firm’s National Legal Excellence Team develops programs focused on core skills and knowledge (eg seminars by leading experts in Contracts and Equity, clear legal drafting programs).

You will participate in fortnightly or monthly learning sessions delivered by your practice group, and can also increase your industry and client knowledge by attending seminars put on by our industry divisions.

Corrs is truly committed to providing you with a broad range of opportunities to help you shape your career.

We actively support further study and provide financial and study leave support for postgraduate study through our Study Assistance scheme. There are opportunities to travel internationally to attend a wide range of short courses through the Corrs Scholarship for Individual Excellence. We also encourage you to participate in client secondments which are valuable in helping you gain insight into our client’s business and how our advice impacts on their day-to-day operations.

Through our international internship program we have given talented lawyers the opportunity to live and work overseas in key jurisdictions that are important to us and our clients, working with major law firms from a number of countries including Japan, UK and US.

We know that we’re fortunate for so many reasons. But an important element of working at Corrs is recognising that with privilege comes the responsibility of giving something back to the community. That’s why we have our Giving Back program - a range of activities and commitments from the firm that promote social responsibility and connect the skills of our people with the less fortunate who need them.

We provide pro bono legal services to disadvantaged individuals and groups as well as charitable and not-for-profit organisations.

From 2008 we have added pro bono as a rotation our graduate program meaning that a group of our graduates from each state join the team of independent, not-for-profit legal referral services.

We also have an extensive Workplace Giving program that allows our staff to make charitable donations to help charities raise much needed funds. Donations are made by staff monthly from their pre-tax pay.

You can read more about the different ways that Corrs gives back to the community by visiting our website.

Corrs aims to champion diversity in all aspects of the workforce - such as gender, age, ethnicity - to ensure an environment that will encourage and retain talented staff.

We offer and support a variety of flexible work options at all levels (including for partners) which can include:

  • Part-time working arrangements
  • Job sharing
  • Working remotely from home and telecommuting
  • Purchasing additional leave
  • Taking career breaks
Whilst it is very important to have the policies in place and the people who champion the flexible work arrangements, it does come down to the individual and that is why it is important that we have partners on flexible work arrangements.

More than half the firm’s staff have some flexible work arrangement or remote working tools and more than a quarter of those on flexible work arrangements are men.
